Position Summary

As a Mechanical Engineer intern, you will work closely with Citrine's engineering team on various projects to support the design, analysis, testing, and development of mechanical systems and components. This role is ideal for students looking to gain practical experience and contribute to real-world projects. Interns will have the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, apply engineering principles, and develop technical skills in a supportive environment.


Engineering work will take place on site at the Citrine Corporate  Office in Lakewood, CO (Denver area). U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residence/Green Card Required.

Education

Students must complete sophomore standing or above by May 2025 and be actively working towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related STEM field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and modeling of mechanical components and systems using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Support the analysis and testing of mechanical prototypes, including gathering and interpreting test data.
  • Conduct research on materials, components, and manufacturing processes to aid in design decisions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues and implement improvements.   
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation and presentations to communicate findings and progress.
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project planning.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science. 
  • Proficiency in CAD software and a strong interest in learning new tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a proactive and detail-orientation approach
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Prior internship or project experience in a related field is a plus but not required.

Competencies

  • Language – Ability to read and interpret documents.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively speak and present information one-on-one and before small groups of clients or employees of the organization.  
  • Math - Ability to comprehend and apply general mathematical concepts.   
  • Reasoning - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, direct written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.  
  • Judgment and Decision-Making – Ability to make routine decisions with pre-established instructions and guidelines. Work is relatively routine and carried out as generally instructed.  Work is closely monitored and frequently checked while in progress.   Minimal discretion is applied as to how to perform the work.

  • Nomination letters from two college/university professors in a STEM field that attest to the applicant's academic potential and motivation.  Letters must be written on college/university letterhead and be signed by the reference.  Professors who wish to submit the letter directly to NextGen can email it to info@nextgenfellows.org.
  • A brief written statement or project description that communicates passion and motivation for one of the STEM fields and aspirations for future work in that field.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.  Current transcript must show full-time enrollment in a STEM major, GPA, and good academic standing. 
  • One color photo taken in the last 6 months. It must show a clear image of the applicant's face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
