Explora science center - Information Technology Intern

Position Summary

The IT Intern provides direct support to the IT Manager.  The interns will assist with a variety of IT tasks, such as setting up new users, updating software and hardware, trouble-shooting general IT issues, and supporting users in a mixed on-site and cloud-based environment.  They also may assist with a variety of administrative tasks related to scheduling, communicating, and coordinating the use of IT and audiovisual equipment in order to fulfill Explora's mission, vision, values and programming commitments. 


Individuals may be required to complete a background check and maintain a current and valid driver's license.



Education

Students must complete sophomore standing or above by May 2025 and be actively working towards a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Data Management or related field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Helps maintain the IT, database, telephone, and business equipment systems for the organization.
  • Helps create and maintain inventories and check-out procedures for tech equipment.
  • Assists with set-up and management of computers and other tech to be used for STEM camps, classes and outreach programs.
  • Helps IT Manager ensure the safety and security of all equipment and information.  This includes providing assistance detecting and handling spam and phishing attempts.
  • Assists with onboarding new staff.
  • Works with Rentals and Admin teams to make sure that events and meetings have the necessary equipment.
  • Handles confidential, personal and proprietary information with discretion.
  • Works with staff to keep their computers and other equipment up-to-date and functioning properly. 
  • Takes initiative, completes tasks, and follows up in a timely manner.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in a STEM field related to Information Technology.
  • Experience with IT-related tasks and an aptitude for learning on the job.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professionalism coupled with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
  • Strong relationship-building and customer service skills.
  • Cool under pressure and solution oriented.
  • Discretion and good judgment.
  • Familiarity with both Mac and Windows operating systems is a plus.


Functional Work Characteristics/Conditions

  • Sufficient skills to work in a business environment.
  • Effective eye-and-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Standing and walking 25% of the time, with regular need to perform physical actions that include sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling materials, pulling, carrying and pushing.
  • May occasionally require lifting of various materials and equipment with a maximum weight of 50 pounds.


Most essential duties are performed in museum and office environments with exposure to a variety of business equipment and materials normally found in this type of work setting.  Museum facilities may expose the intern to high noise levels, temperature changes, liquid nitrogen, helium gas, electrical exposure, unpredictable ventilation, dust, and physical obstacles.  Work is normally performed in an area of limited privacy.  Employees must comply with all operational policies, especially those involving the safety of fellow workers, volunteers, clients/customers.

  • Nomination letters from two college/university professors in a STEM field that attest to the applicant's academic potential and motivation.  Letters must be written on college/university letterhead and be signed by the reference.  Professors who wish to submit the letter directly to NextGen can email it to info@nextgenfellows.org.
  • A brief written statement or project description that communicates passion and motivation for one of the STEM fields and aspirations for future work in that field.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.  Current transcript must show full-time enrollment in a STEM major, GPA, and good academic standing. 
  • One color photo taken in the last 6 months. It must show a clear image of the applicant's face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
