Position Summary

The Makerspace Intern works alongside the X Studio Programs and Partnership Manager and the Makerspace Educator to assist in providing workforce development opportunities and engineering/design/fabrication skills to Albuquerque youth to support their STEAM career pathways.  The Makerspace intern is responsible for greeting and interacting with visitors to the Makerspace at Explora's X Studio, a teen workforce development center.  The Makerspace intern will help maintain equipment in the Makerspace, like 3D printers, the laser cutter, screen printing equipment, computer equipment, and more; additionally, they will use this equipment, along with a variety of other tools, to provide design/fabrication workshops for local teens.  The intern will also assist with data collection and interpretation related to Makerspace programming and will supervise high school students using Makerspace tools and equipment. 


Individuals may be required to complete a background check and maintain a current and valid driver's license.



Education

Students must complete sophomore standing or above by May 2025 and be actively working towards a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with coursework related to engineering, design or fabrication. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create warmth and welcome for all Explora X Studio visitors.
  • Collaborate with Explora staff on the development of X Studio programs for teens and the maintenance of program materials and equipment.
  • Facilitate engineering, design, and fabrication-related demonstrations, activities, and programs for a variety of audiences.
  • Assist in recording and organizing data and other administrative tasks related to programs in X Studio.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and create a welcoming atmosphere at all times.
  • Oversee student youth on Makerspace tools and equipment.
  • Assist with organization of Makerspace tools and equipment and keep the space ready for use by teens and Explora visitors.
  • Ensure emergencies on the exhibit floor/X Studio are handled properly.
  • Deal appropriately with visitor comments/concerns.
  • Comply with all operational policies, especially those involving safety of fellow workers, volunteers and visitors.
  • Interact professionally with all levels of management, peers, co-workers, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Take initiative, complete tasks, and follow up in a timely manner. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Coursework related to the fields of engineering, design, fabrication.
  • Experience with design and fabrication equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, etc.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced, quickly changing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professionalism coupled with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
  • Strong relationship-building and customer service skills.
  • Cool under pressure and solution oriented.
  • Discretion and good judgment.
  • Familiarity with both Mac and Windows operating systems is a plus.


Functional Work Characteristics/Conditions

  • Sufficient skills to work in a business environment.
  • Effective eye-and-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Standing and walking 25% of the time, with regular need to perform physical actions that include sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling materials, pulling, carrying and pushing.
  • May occasionally require lifting of various materials and equipment with a maximum weight of 50 pounds.


Most essential duties are performed in museum and office environments with exposure to a variety of business equipment and materials normally found in this type of work setting.  Museum facilities may expose the intern to high noise levels, temperature changes, liquid nitrogen, helium gas, electrical exposure, unpredictable ventilation, dust, and physical obstacles.  Work is normally performed in an area of limited privacy.  Employees must comply with all operational policies, especially those involving the safety of fellow workers, volunteers, clients/customers.

  • Nomination letters from two college/university professors in a STEM field that attest to the applicant's academic potential and motivation.  Letters must be written on college/university letterhead and be signed by the reference.  Professors who wish to submit the letter directly to NextGen can email it to info@nextgenfellows.org.
  • A brief written statement or project description that communicates passion and motivation for one of the STEM fields and aspirations for future work in that field.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.  Current transcript must show full-time enrollment in a STEM major, GPA, and good academic standing. 
  • One color photo taken in the last 6 months. It must show a clear image of the applicant's face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
