JGMS Engineering Internship (2 Positions)

Position Summary

This position provides basic assistance in support of assigned projects and requires a strong working knowledge of engineering principles. Assignments typically involve moderately complex technology, applications, and project goals. Perform work of low to moderate difficulty and responsibility with minimal latitude and independent judgment.  Work is monitored or reviewed prior to completion. Engineering work will take place in-person and on-site at the JGMS Corporate Office in Grand Junction, CO., and will be supervised by a JGMS engineer or project manager leading the assigned work.  U.S. Citizenship Required.

Education

Students must complete sophomore standing or above by May 2025 and be actively working towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related STEM field with at least one project-based class preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis to identify project requirements and goals. 
  • Develop and design engineering solutions based on project specifications.
  • Collaborate with team members for feedback and guidance while maintaining ownership of the independent project.
  • Assist with input to support requests for new projects and data to support technical documents for accuracy.    
  • Present project updates and results to stakeholders. 
  • Gain an understanding of the vast variety of engineering job opportunities to pursue outside of college.
  • Gain an understanding of contracting and business operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated use of logic and reasoning to identify alternate solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.    
  • Ability to work independently and proactively complete assignments. 
  • Strong ability to complete basic tasks with an elevated level of accuracy, efficiency and thoroughness.    
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard industry systems and software, including CAD. 
  • Time management and organizational skills, including prioritization of tasks under strict deadlines and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.   
  • Willingness to travel with the company’s engineering team to an out-of-state project site. 

Competencies

  • Language – Ability to read and interpret documents.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively speak and present information one-on-one and before small groups of clients or employees of the organization.  
  • Math - Ability to comprehend and apply general mathematical concepts.   
  • Reasoning - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, direct written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.  
  • Judgment and Decision-Making – Ability to make routine decisions with pre-established instructions and guidelines. Work is relatively routine and carried out as generally instructed.  Work is closely monitored and frequently checked while in progress.

Please attach the following to your application:


  • Nomination letters from two college/university professors in a STEM field that attest to the applicant's academic potential and motivation.  Letters must be written on college/university letterhead and be signed by the reference.  Professors who wish to submit the letter directly to NextGen can email it to info@nextgenfellows.org.
  • A brief written statement or project description that communicates passion and motivation for one of the STEM fields and aspirations for future work in that field.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.  Current transcript must show full-time enrollment in a STEM major, GPA, and good academic standing. 
  • One color photo taken in the last 6 months. It must show a clear image of the applicant's face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
